Writing a Resume

Image
Greetings FLI Choir, Writing an effective resume is important in getting the jobs that you want.  In this activity you will write a resume for a job you might want one day that is appropriate for a high school student.  As resumes are often geared towards specific positions, you should imagine a position you might want that is realistic for you as a high school student.  We will talk more about this in class tomorrow. What to include in your resume: -Your name and contact information (address, phone, email) -Objective (some recommend against this, but it is very common) -Education -Work Experience -Skills -Extracurricular Activities and Clubs -Awards and Recognitions -References Note:   You may have much to write that isn't particularly relevant to the job you desire.  Some of those things show something awesome about you and you should definitely share!  Some of those things might just be unneeded, extra information.  You might want to ask a family member for fee

FLI Choir Session #3: Why It's So Hard To Make Healthy Decisions

Image
Hi FLI Choir, Our FLI Choir discussion on Tuesday will be about making healthy decisions.  In your health classes your teachers do a lot to educate you about what's good and what's not, and why. Exercise - Yes! Wearing a seat belt - Yes! Eating a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins - Yes! Sleep - Yes! Drugs - No! Alcohol - Not yet, and even when you are an adult not too much Sitting all day long playing video games - No Scrolling social media all day long - No Creativity and learning - Yes Healthy relationships - Yes The issue as I have found it is that human beings are not always rational people.  We know what is good but still don't always do it.  To explore this, please view this Ted Talk by David Asch before class on Tuesday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI5V1-IFvlI In our conversation on Tuesday we will discuss how we personally can help ourselves make the decisions we know are best.  What may work for somebody e

4th Quarter Grading

Image
Greetings FLI Choir, Distance Learning has created some challenges for adapting our courses and FLI Choir is no exception.  We received word from Oregon Department of Education that our classes are not receiving letter grades, so I want to make clear what's expected to receive a passing grade this Quarter 4.   To receive a passing grade, each student must: 1.  Attend a minimum of 5 of the remaining 7 classes and participate in our discussion/activities.  Please do reach out if you are having internet connectivity issues, or if this requirement is an issue for you.  I will work with you to find another option. 2.  Satisfactorily complete a minimum of 5 of the remaining 7 Google Classroom weekly assignments. Let me know if you have any questions.   -Mrs. Riffel

The Days of the Week - FLI Choir Edition

Image
Hey FLI Choir, I appreciate all of your thoughtfulness and vulnerability in our conversation today.  In the last few minutes of class, we barely touched on a short song project we are going to do.  Steps: 1.  Learn the melody of the song.  I made this to help:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dioyGvltaxtVSdol5QDmg72qlDsP75sx/view?usp=sharing 2.  Create words for the 7 days of the week that go along with your life during this time.  So far I think we had something like: Domingo is a day that I can rest (or some variant of this) - Leela Lunes I have my first zoom call (or some variant of this) - Leif .... Feel free to comment below if you have any suggestions! 3.  I (or Leif??) will create a piano track accompaniment for us to sing along with 4.  We will share the track around, ideally have several voices on the chorus, and little solos on the verses. Let's let our creativity flow! -Mrs Riffel

FLI Choir Session April 14, 2020

Image
Greetings FLI Choir Students, Tomorrow morning we will be meeting at 9am-10am on Google Meet. Link to meeting :   meet.google.com/hcf-cgdp-zjz  Discussion During our session we will talk about the effects of social media on us as individuals, and on our society.  Think about ways that social media benefits you and your community.  Also think about what might be a dark side to social media.  Together we will brainstorm ways to be smart about usage to have a balanced life - especially during this pandemic when we have hours of extra time on our hands. If we have time I will also teach you a short song. :)  If not, then it will happen next week. Reflections I so enjoyed reading your reflections on resilience and about your experiences at events at Lincoln HS.  I know it's sometimes annoying to have little assignments due, but it is very important for us as humans to spend time to reflect on our experiences.  Writing is a great way to organize our thoughts and even make
