Writing a Resume

Greetings FLI Choir,

Writing an effective resume is important in getting the jobs that you want.  In this activity you will write a resume for a job you might want one day that is appropriate for a high school student.  As resumes are often geared towards specific positions, you should imagine a position you might want that is realistic for you as a high school student.  We will talk more about this in class tomorrow.

What to include in your resume:
-Your name and contact information (address, phone, email)
-Objective (some recommend against this, but it is very common)
-Education
-Work Experience
-Skills
-Extracurricular Activities and Clubs
-Awards and Recognitions
-References

Note:  You may have much to write that isn't particularly relevant to the job you desire.  Some of those things show something awesome about you and you should definitely share!  Some of those things might just be unneeded, extra information.  You might want to ask a family member for feedback after you finish.

Tips
-Choose an appealing font and format that highlights important information.
-Don't make it too long and wordy.  Be concise.   As a high school student your resume shouldn't be much longer than one page (front-side only)
-Proofread to avoid typos and grammatical errors.  Funny grammatical errors in real resumes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FClWySJ6Sxs
-Ask a family member for feedback
-Avoid opinions of yourself like "I'm a go-getter" and instead write something in your experience that shows that in action

References
References should be people in your life who know you and are willing to say positive things about you.  Teachers and employers can be excellent references.  Your family members would not be good references.  In the real world you should always ask your references if they are willing.  As this resume is only an assignment no references will be contacted.  You could even write in fake contact information.  However, do think about who you might ask in real life.

The Harsh Reality
Sometimes employers receive dozens of resumes for one position.  What will they see when they glance at your resume?  How are you highlighting your biggest strengths? Can you set yourself apart from the rest?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFngomrq58o

Please submit your resume via Google Classroom by next Tuesday, May 5.
